Chai and questions with Tax Desk

Q1. How do we know which VAT model and registrations we need for Germany?

This depends on how each order reaches the consumer: direct parcel, delivered duty paid or from stock in Germany. Tax Desk carries out an obligations review that maps your sales by channel and fulfilment route against German VAT, IOSS and EPR requirements. You receive a clear view of where you must register now, where a change in model would alter that and where no action is needed.

Q2. We sell on Amazon.de. Does the marketplace handle VAT for us?

Only in part. A marketplace is often the deemed supplier for consumer sales from FBA stock and for imported parcels up to €150. Stock held in Germany, sales through your own webstore and delivered duty paid shipments can still require your own German registration. Our country experts review your marketplace and direct sales together so nothing is missed.

Q3. Should we use IOSS or hold stock in Germany?

IOSS simplifies VAT on parcels up to €150 but an Indian seller needs an EU intermediary to use it and it does not remove the €3 duty or €2 handling fee. Holding stock in Germany avoids the per-parcel charges but requires German VAT registration. Tax Desk advises on the right combination of schemes and local registrations for your business model.

Q4. We have been selling into Germany without registering. What is our exposure?

Our country experts calculate the tax due on past sales together with likely penalties and interest. German authorities may reduce penalties where a business comes forward before being contacted. We advise on the best approach and manage the disclosure process and authority correspondence on your behalf.

Q5. How long does German registration take and what do you need from us?

Registration typically takes from a few weeks to several months. Tax Desk provides a clear document checklist, prepares and submits the application and tracks progress with the Finanzamt. Your dedicated account manager keeps you informed throughout so you know when you can begin selling from German stock.

Q6. What happens once we are registered?

Tax Desk manages ongoing submissions, payments and audit support across VAT, GST, OSS, IOSS and EPR in 90+ countries.
